I created this glossary because my English class teacher asked me to do so). She explained that if one day I worked in an English environment I will need to know the basic terms of my field of study. This is the reason why I am doing this today.
Autism Spectrum Disorder

Catatonia

Catatonia is a disorder that disrupts a person’s awareness of the world around them. People with this condition sometimes react very little or not at all to their surroundings, or might behave in ways that are unusual, unexpected or unsafe to themselves or others. It can have life-threatening complications, but is very treatable with medication or other techniques.
Example: Catatonia can be treated, but if it’s not, it can lead to life-threatening problems.

Intellectual disability

Intellectual disability is a term used when a person has certain limitations both in intellectual functioning (reasoning, learning, problem solving) and in adaptive behavior, which covers a range of everyday social and practical skills.
Example: The behavior becomes a problem in children when they don't grow out of it; this signals a possible obsessive compulsive disorder or intellectual disability.

intervention plan

Intervention plan means a plan designed to improve the progress of students determined to be not making satis- factory progress. An intervention plan must be developed, documented, and implemented by a certificated teacher in conjunction with the student and, for students in grades K-8, the student's parent(s).
Example: Intervention plan means a description of services to be provided in response to the presenting crisis situation that incorporates the identified problem(s), strengths, abilities, needs and preferences of the individual served.

The word “neurotypical” refers to people who have brains that function in a similar way to most of their peers. Individuals who are neurotypical develop skills, such as social or organizational skills, at around the same rate as others their age.
Example: Neurotypical refers to individuals of typical development, and intellectual/cognitive functioning.

An occupational therapist is trained to understand not only the medical and physical limitations of a disability or injury, but also the psychosocial factors that affect the functioning of the whole person.

These individuals intervene with people who are experiencing adjustment difficulties. Such difficulties manifest themselves on a behavioural level in their different living environments. They evaluate individuals’ adaptation in order to intervene effectively.
Example: What does a Psychoeducator do?
Psychoeducators provide evaluation, counselling, preventive action and preventive rehabilitation to people who have psychosocial adjustment difficulty in order to promote their independence and to resolve or prevent conflict.

remedial teacher

A remedial teacher can be a K-12 or college teacher who teaches courses to those students who, for varying reasons, are below their grade level in one or more subjects. In K-12 settings these teachers might be called special education teachers.
Example: The goal of remedial education is to provide extra assistance to students who, for whatever reason, have fallen behind the rest of the class in areas such as language or mathematics.

a special education teacher is an instructor who is specially trained to work with students who experience a wide range of disabilities as specified in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Stereotypical movements

Stereotypic movement disorder is a condition in which a person makes repetitive, purposeless movements. These can be hand waving, body rocking, or head banging. The movements interfere with normal activity or may cause bodily harm.
Example: A person living with autism spectrum disodter can show signs of stereotypical movements like hands flapping.
